Concrete Mixers: A Buyer's Guide for South India Contractors

A concrete mixer earns its keep on the very first slab. Hand mixing wastes cement, gives uneven strength, and slows your crew. A machine mixer gives you consistent concrete batch after batch, with less labour and less wastage. At Hutaib Machinery and Spares (HMS), we have supplied mixers to contractors across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Goa since 1999. This guide explains the sizes we stock, what each one suits, and how to pick the right machine for your site.

The capacity printed on a mixer (for example 240L or 350L) is the drum volume, not the amount of finished concrete per batch. The practical number that matters on site is the cement bag capacity: how many bags you can mix in one go. Our range runs from half bag up to one full bag per batch.

The HMS Concrete Mixer Range

Here are the mixers we keep in stock, with drum size, motor, cement capacity and starting price. Prices change with steel and motor costs, so treat these as a starting point and contact HMS for the current rate.

Half Bag Mixers (240L, 250L, 280L)

The half bag machines are the workhorses for house construction, compound walls, small slabs and repair work. The 240L Starting Type and the 280L Handy Type both run on a 1.5 HP electric motor and suit sites with a steady power connection. The 280L drum is a little larger, so the mix has more room to turn over cleanly.

The 250L with the 2 HP Indian motor is the choice when you want a stronger motor and a sturdier build for longer daily runs. The bigger motor pulls heavier mixes without straining, which matters when your crew is feeding it bag after bag through the day.

Who should buy a half bag mixer

  • Individual house builders and small contractors
  • Sites where one or two crews pour through the day
  • Repair, plastering and flooring jobs with stop-start demand

A half bag drum is also lighter to shift around a tight plot. On narrow access sites, which are common in Bengaluru and other South Indian cities, that ease of handling saves your crew real time. The machine sits closer to your material stack, the carry to the pour point stays short, and one or two workers can reposition it without a struggle.

Three-Quarter and One Bag Mixers (350L, 500L)

When the pour volume goes up, step up to the 350L 3 HP machine at three-quarter bag per batch, or the 500L Kirloskar diesel at one full bag per batch. The 500L runs on a 6 HP Kirloskar diesel engine, so it works on sites with no power or weak supply, which is common on plot developments and rural projects across South India.

These larger mixers cut the number of batches you need for a big slab, footing or column run. Fewer batches means a faster pour and more even concrete, because the gap between loads stays short.

Keep in mind that a bigger drum needs a crew that can feed it fast. A 500L machine working at half pace wastes its size. If your team is small, the 350L often gives a better balance of speed and handling than the 500L. Match the machine to the workers you actually have on site, not just the size of the job.

How to Choose

Three questions settle most decisions:

  1. How much do you pour in a day? Light and stop-start work points to a half bag mixer. Steady, high-volume pours point to the 350L or 500L.
  2. Do you have reliable power? Good supply means an electric mixer is cheaper to run. Weak or no supply means the diesel 500L is the safer pick.
  3. What is your budget? The range here starts around ₹23,000 and goes to about ₹1,30,000, so there is a machine for most pockets.

Frequently asked questions

What does half bag and one bag capacity mean on a concrete mixer?

It is the amount of cement you can mix in one batch. A half bag mixer takes half a 50 kg bag plus the matching sand, aggregate and water per batch. A one bag mixer takes a full bag per batch, so you pour faster with fewer loads.

Which concrete mixer is best for house construction?

For most individual house builds, a half bag mixer like the 240L, 250L or 280L is enough. They handle slabs, walls and flooring with low running cost. Step up to the 350L or 500L only if you pour large volumes through the day.

Should I buy an electric or diesel concrete mixer?

Choose electric (the 240L, 250L, 280L and 350L) when you have a steady power connection, since running cost is lower. Choose the 500L Kirloskar diesel when site power is weak or absent, which is common on plot and rural projects.

What is the price range of concrete mixers at HMS?

Our range starts around ₹23,000 for the 240L half bag mixer and goes to about ₹1,30,000 for the 500L diesel one bag machine. Prices move with steel and motor costs, so contact HMS for the current rate.
