Concrete Finishing and Power Trowels

A slab is only as good as its surface. Hand finishing large floors is slow, and the result is uneven. Power trowels and floaters give a flat, hard, smooth surface across big pours like warehouse floors, parking decks and factory sheds. For South India contractors handling industrial and commercial slabs, the right finishing machine saves hours and gives a better floor.

HMS supplies finishing equipment to contractors across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Goa. This guide covers what each machine does and how to use it.

Floaters and Power Trowels

These are two stages of the same job. Floating comes first, troweling comes second.

Floaters

A Floater works the concrete soon after the bleed water has gone. Float blades or a float pan press the surface flat and push the larger aggregate down. This opens the surface and prepares it for troweling. Floaters start around ₹30,000. Contact HMS for the current price.

Ride On Power Trowel

For large floors, a Ride On Power Trowel covers ground fast. The operator sits on the machine and drives two rotating sets of blades. It finishes a big slab in a fraction of the time a single walk behind trowel takes, and the weight of the machine gives a harder, tighter surface. The Ride On Power Trowel starts around ₹3,20,000. Contact HMS for the current price.

Getting the Timing Right

Finishing is all about timing. Go too early and the machine sinks and tears the surface. Go too late and the concrete is too hard to work.

The Footprint Test

Step on the slab. When your boot leaves a mark of about 3 to 5 mm, the concrete is ready for the first float pass. This is the single most important judgement in floor finishing.

Float First, Then Trowel

  • First pass with float blades or pan to flatten and open the surface.
  • Let the slab firm up between passes.
  • Switch to finish blades and raise the blade pitch for each later pass.
  • Each pass leaves the surface harder and shinier than the last.

Care and Maintenance

  • Clean the blades and pan after every job. Hardened concrete ruins the edge.
  • Check blade wear. Worn blades give a poor finish and uneven pitch.
  • Service the engine as per the manual. Check oil before each day.
  • Grease the gearbox and spider arms regularly.
  • Store blades flat and dry so they do not warp.

Matched to the pour and used at the right time, these machines give a floor that lasts and looks right. A flat, hard surface also takes less topping and resists wear from forklifts and trolleys. HMS stocks blades, pans and spares so a job never stops for want of an edge. Call us for current pricing and advice on which machine suits your slab size.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a floater and a power trowel?

A floater does the first pass, flattening the slab and pushing aggregate down soon after the bleed water clears. A power trowel comes later with finishing blades to harden and smooth the surface. You use both, in that order.

How much does a ride on power trowel cost?

The Ride On Power Trowel starts around ₹3,20,000 and a Floater starts around ₹30,000. Prices vary with engine and blade setup. Contact HMS for current pricing and the right machine for your floor area.

When is concrete ready for the first trowel pass?

Use the footprint test. Step on the slab, and when your boot leaves a mark of about 3 to 5 mm, it is ready for the first float pass. Too early and the machine sinks, too late and the surface will not work.

Is a ride on trowel worth it over a walk behind?

For large floors like warehouses and factory sheds, yes. A ride on trowel covers far more area per hour and its weight gives a harder, tighter finish. For small floors a walk behind or hand work is enough.
